The Birch Tree
A haunting melody that is sure to get stuck in your head, this Russian folk song tells the story of a lady who goes out to find materials to make instruments for her husband. She comes across the birch tree in the meadow. The simple melody was later borrowed by Tschaikovsky for his Symphony No. 4 in F minor. We are going to challenge ourselves soon and try to learn it in Russian as well as English!

Chairs to Mend
Hey you! Come see what I have up for sale! Street criers in England inspired this old tune. So far, the 5th graders have bought into the tam-ti rhythms I've been selling with it! Source: Bethsmusicnotesplus.com

One, Two, Three O'Leary
Somewhere along the line, you have heard this old Irish children's song. In class, we talked about how "O'Leary" is an old expression meaning 'to have a lame leg.' We've been practicing bouncing kickballs underneath our legs and passing them to our partners. This has also been great review of 6/8 time signature. Our version is from the 'Sail Away' text, whereas the variant below comes to us from Music a la Abbott.

We love our Sea Shanties in 5th grade! This familiar tune is a Halyard shanty, used for the raising and lowering of the sails. However, we have found it in some unlikely places….
